An excellent article on music used in society during and after the French Revolution. Many good points including that music was not only used to celebrate past achievements but to look forward to what revolution meant for freedom in ensuing decades.
Question is whether “revolution” is a form of “war.” What constitutes war? Is a civil war also a type of revolution of one segment of society openly rebelling against the other using instruments and means of war such as guns, ammunition, other armaments, battle tactics, observable goals for each side of a war. Does DW want to include revolutions and their music in the discussion and research of music as it is used in war?
That gets back to making a precise and/or inclusive definition of what constitutes a war. More thought to take place. This is February 5th, 2024. DW
