Pink Floyd, The Militancy of Music

This is a wonderful article sparked by the first music put out by the legendary band members David Gilmour and Nick Mason as Pink Floyd in over 28 years. The song “Hey Hey Rise Up (feat. Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Boombox)” which is enwrapped in the Ukrainian song “The Red Viburnum in the Meadow” is the start of the article which enlarges upon the political activism of Roger Waters who is not with the band at this stage.

Wonderfully shot and produced video which shows the great heart of the musicians supporting the resistance of the Ukrainian people to the invasion of Russia on 24 February 2022. But it’s not really about the music – though Khlyvnyuk’s pipes are well up to the band’s legendary playing evident in the video – except for the support it shows the people of Ukraine, the searching for truth in the situation, and the rage against injustice on such a massive scale.

From the article: “In recent years Roger Waters’ political radicalism has deepened . . . The Floyd’s fighting foot is neither circumstantial nor a fad . . . The Floyd’s activism recalls the rock eras when it was believed that art was strong enough to stop a war tank or to stop the bombing of a city. Perhaps it is naive to think so. Dreaming doesn’t cost.”
