The Secret Power of Music

Tame, David. The SecretPower of Music. Rochester, Vermont, Destiny Books, 1984.

This is a fantastic book delving into ancient up to modern times covering what the title says. A general discussion of power in music begins with “Overture: Music and its Power.” Chapters include The Ancient Wisdom: Music in China; The Twentieth Century: The ‘New Music’; Assessment: Music, Man and Society; The Ancient Wisdom: Music in India; The Twentieth Century: Jazz and the Blues – Their Nature and Origin; Assessment: The Physics of the OM; Appendix to 6, The Mystery of Pythagoras’ Comma; and finally Coda: The Ancient Wisdom Revisited: The Modern Esoteric Viewpoint. “Modern” being 35 years ago at this point, but this stuff is forever stuff, so it doesn’t matter how “old” it is, it is part of the ever present now, the energy all around us.

Kind of mystical, kind of practical, the information in this book should be a good background as to why music used during war has the power that it has. Specific power, yes, while the book is more general in its approach as can be deduced from the chapter titles, but these generalities are available to any use of music throughout history.

An amazing find.
